For your consideration is an extremely rare Victorian era Reed & Barton silver plated tea service in the desirable one year only pattern, #1929. This ornately detailed 7 piece set includes a 19″ footed samovar, a 13″ coffee pot, a 12″ tea pot, a 12″ warm milk or chocolate pot, a 10″ covered sugar bowl, a 6.5″ cream pitcher, and a large footed double handled Butler’s serving tray that measures 27 from handle to handle. Standing on a beaded oval base, these substantial serving pieces are enhanced by sharp angular handles and are embellished with elaborate scrolled and foliate etching and heavy beaded enhancements on the body and opening edge of each piece. The lids all operate as intended and are crested with an impressive gothic spire finial, a couple of which are slightly askew. All of the pieces once bore a three letter monogram, MLP, along with the date of 1864, although it appears an attempt was made to remove the monogram on a few of the pieces. A repair was made to the scrolled feet of the samovar and it wobbles slightly, and it no longer has it’s burner that was once cradled at it’s base. All pieces show dings, the worst being a dime sized dent on the side of the tea pot. These are noticeable but not glaringly obvious or distracting when the set is at high polish. The tray is not original to the set but compliments it nicely and was made by Birmingham Silver Co. It does show areas of copper bleeding through. Other pieces show hardly any plate loss and the silver polishes to a clear and brilliant luster with a minimal amount of expected light surface scratching. The cream pitcher shows areas of heavy tarnishing, mostly on the handle, but this will likely clean away and should polish nicely with gentle persistence and effort over time. This is not a perfect set, but it has stood the test of time across a century and a half and still retains it’s glorious and impressive appearance as it is. It’s scarcity and desirability along with a solid basic structural integrity makes this the perfect candidate for a proper restoration if you desire.
