8 piece mixed lot of silver plated kitchen serving ware. Large repouse lion handle punch bowl, size 7 5/8 inch high and 12 7/8 inch wide, no dents, weighted base, not hallmarked, possibly English. One tall English Sheffield tea pot, height 7.5 inch, missing fenial and with lower handle repair(shown in closeups). One smaller rounded woven handle tea pot, 5 inches high, dent on one side, hallmarked. One English creamer, 4.5 inches high. One English gravy boat, 6.5 inches long, hallmarked. One 2 handle English serving piece, 4.5 inches high top of handles, length 7 3/8 inch from handle ends, hallmarked. 2 plates, 5 inch and 5.5 inch, maker marked. The photos show a good overview. For those who don’t speak French, the pattern name – Peau de Lion – simply means Lion Skin which is what is being portrayed on the flatware and hollowware in this pattern. It was supposed to recall the lion skin worn by the mythical Hercules. The pattern was designed by Charles Rossigneux to be shown at the 1867 Paris Exposition, the pattern was produced by three factories Fraget, Christofle and Gorham – it is without doubt the most sought after cutlery patterns, and very scarce. Approx 30.5cm l x 6.5cm widest point. Halphen / Christofle Agreement. Starting in 1853, a new industrial process had been invented by Français Levallois and this was put into use by Charles Haplhen. This new process allowed the fabrication of huge series of cutlery that could be plated later. Up to this point, Christofle’s cutlery was made one by one and could not keep up with demand. Christofle was reluctant to mass produce his own pieces. At the time, he was a bit restless to go on to some other type of metal work. Since the new production method required a heavy financial investment, Christofle signed a contract with Halphen, who was already making maillechort cutlery at his rue de Bondy factory. Under this agreement, cutlery for Christofle was designed by Christofle, Halphen produced the unplated maillechort pieces and then Christofle did the plating.
