Antique Silver on Copper Oval Covered Repousse Serving Dish from E. G. Webster
Webster & Son produced ornate silver-plated, repousse pieces over copper like this covered oval serving dish. This piece features elaborate Dutch revival designs including windmills, dancing figures, floral/grapevine, and cherub scenes. The company was active from 1886 -1928 and were located in Brooklyn, NY. Like most of their antique pieces, this one shows warm copper tones where the silver plating has worn off. This is known as “bleeding” which reveals the copper underneath–a very desirable patina favored by collectors. Involves hammering the metal from the reverse side to create a raised, relief design. The pieces are silver-plated over a copper base. On the base (somewhat worn due to age) but still visible (see photos). This stunning antique piece comes from the estate of a retired diplomat.

Antique Sheffield plate Silver on Copper serving dish. Three piece silverplate serving dish including a lid with detachable handle, base and warming stand with twin handles. Elegantly shaped with foliate and shell trim and branch handles and finial. Silver on a copper base, known as Sheffield plate, was an early technique where sheets of silver where rolled and bonded to a copper core. Starting in 1840, the new, more cost effective process of electroplating was used for silver plating most items, making Sheffield plate pieces rare. Mark on base denotes it was made in England, and is silver on copper. There is a thistle mark though I have been unable to identify the maker based on this. Similar pieces date to the early 1800s. Uncommon to find four piece serving dishes of this kind. Good condition overall condition for age. Some general scuffs and scratches to surface from use. Copper shows through silver in a few places, known as’bleeding’ or’bloom’ and is considered desirable by some collectors. See photos for more detail. Measurements: 14 3/4″ x 10″ x 7.

A matching three piece Indian silver plated copper tea set comprising of a teapot, milk jug / creamer & sugar bowl. Each piece is decorated with various figures within roundels and chased foliate designs. Date: Early 20th Century. Recently cleaned with a small amount of tarnish left in the crevices and some areas of copper bleed can be seen on each piece. Dimensions: (of the teapot). Length: 22.488 cm (8.853) inc. Width: 11.245 cm (4.427). Height: 12.963 cm (5.103). Weight: 667 g combined.
