RARE, hard to find ANTIQUE Meriden Brittania 1861 silver plate Tea/Coffee/Samover 6 piece set in excellent used condition! This gorgeous set includes. Samovar with bone handle and lid, holds 64 oz. Measures 17 1/2″ in height, 10″ in width and 10 deep. Coffee Pot, holds 40 oz. Measures 11″ in height, 9″ in width and 4 diameter. Tea Pot, holds 32 oz. Measures 11″ in height, 9″ in width and 4 diameter -it is slightly smaller than the coffee pot and holds less liquid. Sugar bowl with lid, measures 10″ in height, 8 1/2″ in width and 4 diameter. Creamer, holds 16 oz. Measures 7 1/2″ in height, 5 1/2″ in width and 3 1/4 diameter. Waste Receptacle, measures 6 3/4″ in height, 5″ in width and 4 in diameter. This 164 year old antique Victorian set is in AMAZING condition, with a beautiful patina commensurate with its age and very light staining in the interior of the pieces. I have lightly polished the samovar, but most customers do not want the patina removed from antique pieces. The piece of bone on the samovar handle is unique, and the scrolled feet have intricately designed patterns. The entire set is chased with elegant designs and embellishments of “beading” on all pieces. The “AW” script monogram on all pieces blends beautifully into the floral design, so it does not detract from the set. The pointed finials lend interest and the “larger” than normal size of this set leads to high interest by collectors. The Meriden Brittania pattern uses “Brittania” metal, an alloy of tin, copper and antimony, as the base under the silver plating. Meriden Brittania designs are included in museum collections as they are such an integral part of USA’s silver plate history. This pattern was discontinued by Meriden in 1866. The Waste Receptacle is an interesting piece in this collection. In Europe, the waste receptacle was a traditional part of a tea set. It was used for emptying cold tea and dregs from teacups before refilling teacups with hot tea, as the leaves tended to remain in the bottom of the cups. It is also known as a “slop bowl, slop basin or waste bowl” (pictured in photos #18, 19). Whether used for serving or as a standout decorative set, this Meriden Brittania 1861 tea set captures the essence of a bygone era. Its historical value and timeless style make it a remarkable find for enthusiasts of antique silver plate and those who appreciate the beauty of Victorian design. Elevate your tea or coffee experience with this exquisite and unique 6 piece set from Meriden Brittania, a testament to the grandeur of Victorian era craftsmanship. The intricately ornate designs on each piece showcase the elegance of silver plate work from the mid-19th century. The Meriden Brittania Company was founded in 1852 in Meriden, Connecticut. In 1898 the company became part of the International Silver Company. Will be split into two boxes with the Samovar in one box.
