Victorian Era Meriden Britannia 5 Piece Beaded and Etched Silverplate Tea Set
For you to consider is an antique 5 piece quadruple silver plated tea service. Exquisitely crafted during the Victorian era by Meriden Britannia Silver Co. Founded 1867, Meriden, CT. , this ornately detailed 5 piece set includes a 12″ coffee pot, an 11″ tea pot, a 9.5″ covered sugar bowl, a 6.5″ cream pitcher, and a 6 open waste bowl. Standing on a beaded oval base, these substantial servers are enhanced by sharp angular handles and are embellished with an elaborate scrolled and Greek key etching and heavy beaded enhancements on the body and opening edge of each piece. The coffee pot, tea pot, and sugar bowl are all crested with an impressive gothic finial on their covers, a couple of them are slightly askew. Having been stored away forgotten, apparently, for several decades, the tea set acquired a dark black heavy coating of thick tarnish that is in process fading away after multiple polishings. In good condition for it’s age, the silver remains largely intact though some areas of heavy tarnish remain and will need attention if you desire a high polish. The tarnish is removing and does polish away with some effort and patience which has revealed a gorgeous silver plating beneath that appears clear and brilliant and in remarkable condition. There could possibly be some occasional minor flecks of plate loss, but there is nothing immediately noticeable that has appeared at this point in time in polishing away the tarnish. A couple of very minor dings are also randomly found but are so small they are impossible to photograph and are not obvious, and there are two minor stress cracks to the interior edge of the waste bowl that can be found only if you know precisely where to look. The Meriden Brittania hallmark along with pattern number 1941 is engraved to the bottom of each piece, and a single initial monogram “W” (or it could also be interpreted as “M”) is seen on one side of each piece. Wear is commensurate for age, use, and decades long storage, so please review the photos as they are a descriptive part of the listing. A fabulous opportunity to own a stunning Victorian tea set crafted when American metalsmithing was a burgeoning art form in its finest hour. We welcome your questions and are delighted to answer!
