Early, Original White Star Line Mappin & Webb Cutlery During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Mappin & Webb was one of many silver suppliers to the White Star Line. By 1910, Elkington & Co. Had replaced other manufacturers as the predominate suppliers of dining accoutrements to the various dining saloons and public rooms of White Star Line ships. When the Olympic Class ships were built, the White Star Line chose to christen their First Class Dining Saloons with a new, exclusive, pattern. In 1911, Elkington began production of the hollow handled “Reed & Stars” Rd. 579791 and the solid handled counterpart Rd. 579792, which had a pointed “tear drop” shaped bottom emblazoned with a single star on front. These were used exclusively on the Olympic Class ships until WWI when they then saw fleetwide service. This continued up until the merger with Cunard when the pattern was phased out. This rarely seen Mappin & Webb pattern closely resembles the solid handled Elkington Rd. 579792 in size and shape, but is devoid of the single star on the front. I believe this may be a previous First Class pattern, and the predessor of the more celebrated Elkington version used on pre 1910 ships. 5 x Serving Spoons. 11 x Dessert Spoons. 6 x Three Tine Forks. The reverse has a star date symbol, 1A mark (highest quality silverplate grade) and the Mappin & Webb backstamp. The White Star Line burgee is visible on the majority and beautifully stamped. You will see in the pictures these have been regularly polished so the markings are faded some more so than others. In addition to the items shown in this listing, I do have more sets of cutlery.
